I created a few letters of Awkward for a type study on brutalism and decided to extend it into a full ~100 character typeface. Awkward’s brutalist beginnings gave way to nihilistic tendencies - this font doesn’t believe in anything — x-heights, caps, hinting, horizontal stroke adjustment… All of the typographic principles I know to be important are kicked to the kerb.
And yet… even in pushing the boundaries of an acceptable monoline stroke width, it somehow hangs together in it’s incoherence. It’s not right for everything. It might not be right for anything. It won’t sit pretty straight out of the box and I can’t promise that it’ll behave for you, but I really enjoyed the freedom it provided and hope you enjoy playing with it too.
